Cytosport Monster Milk Review

Monster Milk Vs. Muscle Milk

Monster Milk is a protein supplement made by Cytosport, which also makes quite a few other popular bodybuilding supplements such as Muscle milk, Cytogainer, and Monster Mass. Monster Milk sounds a lot like Muscle Milk, and some may be wondering what the difference is between Muscle Milk vs. Monster Milk. We'll discuss that in a bit. Monster milk contains a blend of fast and slow digesting proteins making it a time release protein supplement. So, let's take a quick look it's ingredients and nutrition facts.

Each serving of Monster Milk contains:

  • 310 calories
  • 6g fat (2g saturated)
  • 13g carbohydrates
  • 50g proteins

It also contains various vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, B12, and a few minerals as well. It also has a "Monster Amino Acid Matrix" which contains glutamine, glutamine peptides, L-leucine, and L-isolucine. There is also 3g of creatine monohydrate. The protein contents of Monster Milk includes milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate, whey concentrate, and caseinate proteins as well. As mentioned earlier, Cytosport Monster Milk has a time release component with its fast and slow digesting proteins, and the casein proteins in it are the slower digesting / absorbing proteins.

Muscle Milk Vs. Monster Milk

So, the names of Monster Milk and Muscle Milk certain are very similar, and some users are bound to get confused by them and wonder what's the difference between the two? Not to worry, we'll do a side by side comparison of the two here, and you'll get a better idea of their differences, or similarities.

                Monster Milk         Vs.         Muscle Milk

Calories:        310                                    300
Fat:                6g                                     12g
Carbs:           13g                                    16g
Proteins:        50g                                    32g
Creatine:        3g                                      n/a
Cost:           2.06lb @ $35                   2.47lb @ $27
Cost:           4.13lb @ $65                   4.94lb @ $52

The above lists the basic differences between Monster Milk and Muscle Milk.  From above, Monster Milk costs more, has a bit more calories, less fat, slightly less carbs, and quite a bit more proteins per serving (50g compared to 32g). And it also contains 3 grams of creatine monohydrate. On the surface, Monster Milk may appear to cost quite a bit more compared to Muscle Milk, but if we do the math and compare on a cost per gram of protein basis, we'll see that the cost difference is quite different.

                                           Monster Milk                 Muscle Milk

Cost per gram of protein:       $0.0542                         $0.0577

As you can see comparing the cost of each calculated based on the cost per gram of protein, Monster Milk actually comes out on top with a slightly lower CPGP at $0.0542 compared to $0.0577 for Muscle Milk. Overall, the main differences between the two is that Monster Milk contains quite a bit more protein, BCAA's, and also contains some creatine as well.

As far as Monster Milk side effects go, I can't say that there are any. After all, you don't expect much side effects from using a protein supplement. Cytosport Monster Milk comes in 2.06lb and a 4.13lb containers, and its flavors include chocolate, chocolate chip cookie, cookies n cream, vanilla, and peanut butter chocolate. So far, I've tried the chocolate, cookies n cream, and vanilla flavors, and thought that they all tasted excellent. Muscle Milk may seem like a big bargain to buy compared to Monster Milk, but as we've shown in our comparison above, the cost works out to be almost the same with Monster Milk having a slight advantage in terms of protein costs. Great tasting! The chocolate flavor tastes great. But I've only been using it for a week, so can't comment much yet. But so far so good.
